  • Serpentinite Crystal Island

This gouache painting is about 7 x 9″ in size, on watercolour paper. It’s an exploration of the geological identity of some parts of Gros Morne National Park, in Newfoundland, Canada. The green serpentine crystals are growing from the granite and serpentinite mix of Gros Morne, specifically the Tablelands. The dark spruce and fir trees are silhouetted against distant hills and rolling fog. This piece is my love letter to that gorgeous park and the sense of magic it has.

  • Drawing – Lonely Visitor

This drawing on cream paperย is an exploration of the Crystal Island concept to include people. The figure creates aย psychogeography of theย landscape.

The landscape in this drawing was taken from reference photos of French River Provincial Park, an absolutely gorgeous place in Ontario, Canada. There are delicate tall pines and windswept shrubs and bushes along the shores of a rushing river, passing through a deep gorge. Despite the speed of the water and the constant wind, the place feels still and isolated and special.

  • This illustration, featuring a 5th Edition D&D cleric named Brialma, was painted in gouache on hot press watercolour paper, at about 8 x 10″ in size. The scene is taken from 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons, or DnD, and was inspired by some of our in-play failures to detect or defend our characters against monsters and traps.

  • What I’ve Learned About Teaching Art

I’ve had the privilege of teaching art in a variety of environments – from still life oil painting at the college level, to combining art with science and history in a museum setting, to guiding highschool students through creating a comics anthology. Through these very different settings, I’ve found a list of constants that, when I keep them in mind, help me deliver the most enjoyable and effective art education for my students.

One of my core beliefs is that art is, at the heart of it all, something a student must teach themself, and that a classroom, workshop, or camp that wants to teach art is actually responsible for creating an environment and offering projects that facilitate that self-driven learning.

With that on the table, here is the pantheon of truths that, if I can hold on to all of them, help me create that learning environment:
